Grading Policies

What is a Standards-Based Report Card?

Standards describe what students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade. Teachers base their planning, instruction and assessment on important NYS Standards. Teachers communicate students’ progress based on the standards.

What Grades Do Children Receive and How are they Determined?

Your child will receive a standards-based report card that uses a 4, 3, 2, 1 reporting system. Their scores will be determined by informal assessments, formal assessments, written assessments and other assessment activities.

  • Reading - Teachers use benchmarks, reading groups, observations, and reading skills work to determine grades.

  • Writing - Teachers use writing rubrics based on the standards.

  • Listening & Speaking - Teachers use observations to determine grades.

  • Mathematics - Teachers use GO Math chapter test averages, to determine the grades.

  • Science - Teachers use the science learning rubric when giving the science grades.

  • Academic & Personal Behaviors - Teachers use ongoing informal observations based on the student’s classroom behaviors.
